Growing up as a latchkey child, Denny often completed her homework after school by herself. Both of her parents worked full-time to support the family, so she was left to struggle through some of the more challenging assignments alone. When faced with a tough algebra equation or struggling to understand the deeper meaning of a poetry assignment, Denny often wished she had someone to talk to for help and support.
When Denny was older, she chose to become a teacher because she found great joy working with middle school students. Her first day as a teacher went well, but she didn’t quite feel like she had found her true passion. During class, it broke her heart to see many of her students struggling academically because of poor after-school study habits. The desire to help these struggling students grew more each day, but the decision to leave a steady teaching position to start her own academic mastermind program wasn’t easy.
Denny spent three years as a teacher before she decided she couldn’t ignore her dream any longer. She left her public-school teaching position in 1999 to start building an innovative academic mastermind program. It was then that School-Connection was born.
